Chicago Public Library Best Board & Picture Books of 2024

From the acclaimed and bestselling creator Tana Hoban, this sturdy accordion-format board book features iconic black-and-white images of recognizable objects from a child’s world accompanied by full-color photographs of babies interacting with those objects. A perfect gift for new parents and for tummy time.

Before babies can see color clearly, they respond to the high contrast between black and white. This accordion-style foldout board book is sturdy enough to stand on its own, is ideal for little hands, and features Tana Hoban’s bold and iconic black-and-white images of familiar objects along with full-color photographs of adorable babies interacting with those objects.

Showcasing everyday objects from childhood—for example, a bottle, a spoon, or a flower—Black & White in Color educates, entertains, and helps a baby’s developing brain make connections in an ever-expanding world.

This edition includes high-contrast art from two bestselling Tana Hoban titles: Black on White and White on Black. These classic and popular board books have sold more than one million copies.

Reviews

“Based on images from Hoban’s distinctive board books, Black on White and White on Black, this new book pairs her silhouettes of objects familiar to young children with. . . captivating color photos, creating a matching game. . . .This accordion book easily unfolds horizontally to display a row of pictures, another way for children to enjoy this appealing, many-faceted book.” — Booklist

“This hybrid accordion board book gives babies the best of both worlds. To many of the iconic images from Hoban’s classic board books Black on White and White on Black  have now been added color photos of adorable children wearing or holding one of the objects shown. . . . Sure to keep the very youngest book-users enthralled during ‘tummy time.’” — Horn Book Magazine

“The very original black and white silhouetted work of the late, great Tana Hoban has been fused with Getty stock full-color photographs so that those who grew up on her startling images and high concepts can pass along these ideas to their own progeny. . . . Welcome a new generation into the Hoban household and help them over the threshold into the land of Lillian Hoban and Russell, too” — School Library Journal
